An isolated shot of a confused and puzzled businessman
August 1st will be the 40th anniversary of MTV. I remember the day I stood in line for the new “Clicker” box for all the channels they added to the cable system in Wausau. They did it at the Mall Furniture building on Grand Avenue. A whole new world in TV viewing. They had a bunch of 26″ TVs set up (LOL) so you could see the new cable while in line. Well, MOST of those were tuned to MTV. Yes, a channel where they played nothing but Music Videos! HOW COOL IS THIS?!?!?! I specifically remember seeing The Talking Heads “Once in a Lifetime” playing. Odd video to begin with but…it was for some reason very cool. Anyway…MTV was a source to open up many genres of music. Many groups got massive exposure. From pop rock to progressive. Live concerts on Saturday Nights. It was THEE thing. Well, without going on too long…what the hell happened? How do you celebrate this channel on August 1st? Why in the hell did they not change the name of the channel years ago. Yes, the channel known as “Music Television” DOESN’T PLAY ANY MUSIC VIDEOS anymore and hasn’t in years?!?! This one will always be a head scratcher BUT I can at least tip my hat on August 1st from something that did change the world of music. Although only for a few years it certainly did have an impact. I don’t think I could tell you ANY programming they have on that channel. Last I have heard it was geared at 18 and under? Oh ya…what ever happened to VH1??? That’s a subject for another time. “I want(ed) my MTV”.
