Where Did It All Go Wrong?

By Duff Damos Mar 21, 2022 | 8:06 AM

Well, I heard an interview the other day with CSN’s David Crosby.  In the interview he talked about the state of the music industry today.  I was SHOCKED to say the least.  When he described how artists/bands are making next to nothing from streaming services.  Unlike the days of old when they sold albums and could actually make a living.  A time when you had MANY superstars drowning the airwaves with incredible music and all sold lots of albums, cassettes, etc.  In those days a band or artist would not make alot of money on touring/concerts.  They would do it to support a new album.  Today, it’s the opposite.  They make their money touring which is why ticket prices are so out of this world.  They have to come up with the gimmicks, lights, explosions, video screens and all the bells and whistles.  The more gimmicks, the more tickets they will sell.  Their music on those cheesy streaming services is hopefully making the people spend the money to see them live so they CAN pay the bills.  The internet/streaming has all but ruined the music industry.  As I mentioned earlier you don’t see too many superstars today.  Take a group the may have a big hit this year.  Will you even remember them in 5 years??  Probably not.  I could go on and on about it but why.  You get it.  As David Crosby said those streaming services are paying next to nothing to the artists so what’s the incentive for anybody to get in to the music industry?  It’s all pretty damn sad.  Thank GOD for classic rock!  It proves that all these superstars earned their stripes.  Superstars that survived the test of time (and the internet) and are remembered for their longevity and talent.  I miss the days of a new band that turns in to a supergroup but unfortunately I have surrendered to the fact that those days are gone.  Thank GOD I was able to live those years in my life and my career.
