(MINNESOTA) — Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, who was found guilty on all three charges he faced in the death of George Floyd, will be sentenced June 16.
The hearing is set to commence at 1:30 p.m. CT.
Chauvin was found guilty on April 20 of second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter in the May 25, 2020 death of Floyd, 46.
Chauvin faces a total of up to 40 years in prison, of which Judge Peter Cahill will decide following the jury’s unanimous guilty verdicts. However, due to the former officer’s lack of a criminal record, he is more likely to be sentenced to 15 years per Minnesota sentencing guidelines.
Chauvin also is granted the opportunity to file an appeal on all his convictions and has 90 days to do so.
Floyd’s death sparked protests across America and around the world and re-ignited the Black Lives Matter movement when he died while under arrest for allegedly passing a counterfeit $20 bill at a Minneapolis, Minnesota convenience store. Among Floyd’s last words were “I can’t breathe,” which became a rallying cry against police brutality.
