Self-proclaimed Wisconsin boy band Motherwind is certainly anything but average! Lead vocalist Anthony Frey brings a breath of fresh air with his clean and controlled vocals. While they claim to have a 70s influence, it’s present yet subtle—something I don’t believe their general club audience will readily pick up on. I hear a lot of influence from Royal Bliss and similar bands of that era, infused with what I’d call a “chaadah twist.” The Midwest influence in their songwriting, in my humble opinion, is what makes these songs relatable, especially for a generation facing judgments that previous generations never experienced. This theme comes through in songs like “Lemonade” and “Razor Blades,” their most recent release. Gen X listeners might appreciate the jam but could also find it somewhat whiny and off-balance. If one were to draw a conclusion based on the two songs featured on their main website, the first thing you’d notice is the remarkably similar breakdown points in both tracks. While that’s cool, it can become a bit predictable when overused. However, I have to say that the guitar work in both songs is absolutely great, especially in “Jars.” Additionally, their music videos are very entertaining and really help you connect with the lyrics. Another song to pay attention to is “2005,” as the lyrics in this track are excellent. I would definitely recommend checking out anything you can find by them, and I fully intend to catch one of their live shows, as it looks like that’s where the real energy is for this band. I’m certain we’ll see great things from them in the future. As an old rock fan, their music caught my attention, prompting me to take a deeper dive, which brings you this review. Be sure to give them a look and a listen—a fun band for a Wisconsin boy band, for sure! Keep up the good work, boys!
